Most of the debate about AI in FP&A swings between hype and dismissal. The useful question is narrower: which tasks can AI help with today, given your data, controls and review process?
Generally safe with review
- Drafting first-pass variance commentary from closed, reconciled numbers
- Summarizing long reports, board packs and contracts
- Explaining formulas and restructuring messy workbooks
- Drafting process documentation and policies
Possible, with strong foundations
- Answering ad-hoc questions against governed, consistently defined data
- Generating recurring report narratives with a named reviewer
- Flagging unusual movements for a human to investigate
Not yet, for most teams
